In Michigan, when a school bus stops and its red lights are flashing, drivers in both directions must stop at least 20 feet away and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the lights are turned off, except on divided highways where only those in the same direction need to stop.
When to Stop:
Drivers must stop when a school bus is stopped and its red lights are flashing, regardless of the direction of travel (except on divided highways).
Yellow Flashing Lights:
When a school bus's overhead lights are flashing yellow, drivers should prepare to stop, as the bus is likely to stop soon.
Penalties:
Violations of school bus laws can result in fines, points on your license, and potentially even jail time in cases of injury or death.
St. Joseph Public Schools Transportation Office:
Action Required: Parents must fill out a transportation request form for the 2024/2025 school year, even if their student rode the bus last year. Only one form per student is needed.
Deadline: The online form opened on June 5, 2024, and closed on August 7, 2024. If the deadline is missed, parents must contact the Transportation Department directly, which may delay the student’s ability to ride the bus at the start of the school year.
Bus Tags: Once approved, bus tags will be issued to students (except for high school students) and are required to ride the bus. Tags will be distributed at Upton’s start-up day and elementary ice cream socials.
Special Notes:
High school students need to sign up but won't receive bus tags.
Students living outside the St. Joseph school district must arrange their own transportation unless special consideration is granted for school employees’ children.
Updated bus routes and times will be available on the school website by August 17, 2024. Times may be adjusted through out the year due to lack of students, please be sure to check back for changes or adjustments.
