About Me
Mr. Lignell
Brown Elementary
Teaching Grade

Hello, I am Kent Lignell. I want to start by welcoming all of my students and parents to a very exciting school year.

Although this will only be my seventh year teaching for St. Joseph Public Schools, I am not new to the district. In fact, I started my education at Brown Elementary School. When I went to Brown, the grades were K-6th not K-5. Upton was a junior high and not a middle school. I was very fortunate to join my much older sister, Kelly Lignell, and replace my father who taught for 40 years in this exceptional school district.

This will be my 17 year of teaching. My first two years of teaching were in West Palm Beach, Florida. I then moved back to St. Joseph, where I taught and coached varsity wrestling in Benton Harbor for six years.

I graduated from Arizona State University (Go Sun Devils!) with a Bachelors of Arts in Education. I am currently working towards my Masters in Elementary Education at Western Michigan University.

I am the father of two rambunctious boys, Jacob Charles (14 years), and Phoenix Alexander (8 years).  Jacob is a seventh grader that attends Upton Middle School and Phoenix will start his third year at Brown in first grade (so I will be able to keep a good eye on him daily).

My family orientation has helped me enjoy and thrive in the classroom over the years. There is never a dull moment with a room full of children!

Thank you in advance for all of your support at home. It's the involved and dedicated parents that take our district from "Good" to the notorious - "Amazin' Blue!"

Go Bears!!!

Summer Food Service Program

Welcome to the Michigan Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site locator. The SFSP was created to ensure that children in lower-income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs.
